Commodity Trading Accounts can be opened either by Online or via Regular Mail. Most use the online method.
Before you open a Commodity Trading Account however do a Basic Search at the NFA's Website on the commodity trading firm and the commodity trading broker if you have one. If we help one investor from not opening a Commodity Trading Account with a shady commodity firm accused of cheating, fraud, deceiving customers, failure to supervise etc.... we have done our part.
Once the search is complete you can begin the next steps to open a Commodity Futures Trading Account.
1. Filling Out the Online Commodity Account Forms. Forms cover the huge amount of Risk you are jumping into, Personal Fin. Information to verify you are who you say you are and you have the fin. resources to be able to trade commodities. Risk Capital or Money you can afford to lose.
2. Preparing Your Intial Deposit. When you fund your account with a commodity trading firm or broker this does not mean you have to risk the entire amount.
Buying Commodity Options for example. If you are trading or just Buying Commodity Options and open an account for $5000 (or whatever the min. account size) you are allowed to buy however many you wish. If the broker advises you to buy 10 Option Contracts of a Commodity with your $5000, that would be $500 per option and if you don't feel comfortable just buy 1 Option to see how the process works.
For Futures Trading. If you are trading futures or selling Commodity Options there is unlimited risk, meaning you can lose more money then what you invested. And stop orders do not guarantee to limit your loss in all market conditions such as locked limit, fast moving etc., if you don't understand the risk you should not be opening your account and trading commodity futures.
Most commodity traders fund their Commodity Trading Account by using Bank Wire or Regular Check
3. Last Step Would be Downloading the Commodity Trading Platform.
For those trading without a commodity trading broker. You should practice with a trading demo to get used to the platform first before placing live trades.
If you are using a broker to place trades. Clients should be able to view their account online in real time or 10 to 15 minute delayed quotes to monitor how your positions are moving.
